As someone who has battled with this terrible condition myself, I can officially say that I know some of the best essential oils for rosacea. I found a few oils that worked wonders for my skin and helped clear up the breakouts very quickly. I would suggest these to anyone who suffers from the effects of rosacea!
Rosacea is a skin condition that 1 out of every 20 Americans suffer from. But because it is so frequently misdiagnosed as different skin conditions, most experts believe that number is well short of the real number.
Unfortunately, there currently isn’t a cure for this condition. The truth of the matter is that rosacea isn’t something that kills people, so research funding is concentrated on other more deadly conditions. That being said, there are things that you can do to help with the symptoms and lesson the effects. This can include applying essential oils to help with rosacea, taking antibiotics, topical steroids, among other treatment options that a doctor may recommend.
Before we get into how essential oils can help, let’s go over the condition in a little more detail.
What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition in which the effected person suffers from patches of inflamed skin. It is most commonly a condition that you experience on your face, but can happen anywhere on your body. Many people mistake rosacea for a bad case of acne or eczema, making it hard for them to treat.
Some classic signs of rosacea include the following:
- Frequent red blotches on your face
- Thin red lines under your skin
- Inflamed eyes or eyelids
- Constant redness and numbs
- Skins feels like it is burning
This condition effects men and woman of all ages, but there are some groups of people who are more likely to be effected. Woman, especially during menopause, are far more likely to experience rosacea. It is also more common to see it in those between the ages of 30 and 60 years old. Luckily, woman between the ages of 30 and 60 are also the most likely to try essential oils for rosacea.
What Causes Rosacea
Experts haven’t done much research into what causes rosacea. Most of their time is spent looking for ways to control or cure their condition. That being said, there are a few common factors that are known to contribute to this condition.
Dermatologists have found that abnormalities in someone blood vessels can cause the redness and flushing associated with rosacea. This would also cause the visible red blood vessels under the skin. What they haven’t been able to explain yet is what causes the inflammation.
Experts have found that patients diagnosed with rosacea have much a much higher count of demodex folliculorum, a microscopic mite, than those that are not. They are not sure if those high numbers are what is causing the condition, or if they are a result of the condition. They only know that the two are related in some way.
It is also believed that you inherit a larger chance of experiencing this condition if a close relative does to. There has not been enough study to discover which gene that is, but most patience have reported that they have a close relative that also suffers from the effects of rosacea.
How Essential Oils For Rosacea Can Help
Essential oils can naturally help with just about any condition our there. The fact is that all traditional medicines come from bits and pieces of natural substances. Essential oils allow us to use those benefits before they are molested by modern medical technology.
With rosacea, essential oils are the perfect solution to dealing with some of the effects. While they can not heal rosacea, nothing can at this point. They can do just as good of a job of minimizing the effects as any traditional medication in my opinion.
Each essential oil has different strengths and therefore has the ability to help with different aspects of rosacea. Your best bet is to find the right mixture for your case and improve it over time. I use a mix of three of the oils on this list and it works wonders when I have an outbreak!
What Essential Oils Help With Rosacea?
Borage Essential Oil
This oil is extracted from the borago officinalis plant, also known as a “star flower”. It is very rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid. Your body cannot naturally produce this fatty acid and depends on you to bring them in through the food that you eat. This is my favorite essential oil for rosacea personally!
Mix a few drops of this oil with your favorite carrier oil and apply it directly to the affected areas. The ant-inflammatory effects of this essential oil can quickly reduce the swelling that you experience with rosacea. It will also reduce the amount of redness in the area and help you feel more confident. On top of those two benefits, this oils is also a very effective emollient and will help improve the condition of your skin in general.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil is one of the most common oils to use on any skin condition that you can think of. It is acquired from lavender flowers, through the use of steam distillation, while they are in full bloom. That gives the oil a nice scent to go along with all of the uses and benefits it has to offer.
This oil is great for rosacea specifically because of its calming and anti-inflammatory effects. I like to mix a few drops of this with coconut oil and apply it to my entire face. I figure it’s not going to hurt anything to make sure that I cover all my bases!
Rosehip Essential Oil
This oil has become a staple skincare product in the fashion industry. It is extracted from “hips”, the small fruit that grows behind the flower, or wild rose bushes. This extraction happens once the flowers have bloomed and the petals have completely expired.
This essential oil is great for rosacea oil for the same reasons I like borage oil. It contains a large amount of GLA. These fatty acids help your skin form and sustain healthy cell membranes. Mix a few drops of this essential oil with a small amount of your favorite carrier oil and apply the mixture to any effected oils.
Primrose Essential Oil
While we are talking about essential oils that are high in GLA, let’s talk about another one of my favorite essential oils for rosacea. This oil is derived from the seeds or wild roses and are a popular oral supplement for those looking to improve their skin condition.
What makes primrose great for rosacea is that it helps keep your skin cells hydrated and protected. It also gives your skin a soothing effect when applied topically.
German Chamomile Essential Oil
German chamomile essential oil is another great oil that has numerous benefits for those of us suffering from the effects of rosacea. For the same reasons that you should drink chamomile tea, you should add few drops into your face cream. It quickly calms the skin and helps you cells get started in the regrowth process.
Jojoba Essential Oil
This great essential oil will do wonders for your rosacea. It is extracted from the seeds of a jojoba plant, also referred to as goat nut, deer nut, pignut, or wild hazel. Jojoba is so great for your skin that you can also find this is many skin products or in pill form.
It is a fantastic essential oil for rosacea because it has emollient qualities without causing any irritation. Jojoba also has the ability to reduce water loss within the skin itself. This helps keep your skin moisturized, reducing the effects of rosacea.
Neroli Essential Oil
This essential oil is known for its ability to balance the production of sebum and other oils on your face. This prevents any dry spots that are more likely to suffer from rosacea. I like to add a drop of this oil to any other mixture that I use on my face.
Rosewood Essential Oil
Rosewood is another essential oil that I like to add to any other oil mixture I create for my rosacea. It has a whole slew of benefits for your skin that are beneficial for this condition. The most commonly discussed benefit of rosewood essential oil is its ability to keep skin tight and “elastic”.
Tamanu Essential Oil
Extracted from the seeds of hardwood Calophyllum trees, this essential oil is used all over the world for its antimicrobial abilities. It can help fight your rosacea by reducing inflammation and fighting any infection. At the same time, it does a great job of promoting the growth of healthy skin tissue.
These are the best essential oils for rosacea in my opinion, but I will admit that I haven’t tried everything. These are just the oils that I have tried and found work very well for me and my skin. You might find different oils that work for you. If that is the case, please feel free to let me know in the comment section below so that I can do some research and potentially add them to this resource!
